Buwan ng Wika: Celebrating Language and Culture
JUNIOR JOSEPHIAN CHRONICLES
Douanne Chrysia D. Reyes

During the month of August, us Filipinos celebrate Buwan ng Wika to promote the importance of Filipino language and culture. Every year schools hold various activities for students to express their creativity and appreciation of being a Filipino. Alongside this celebration, the school also held a mass for the feast of St. Augustine; making the event more meaningful to the school community.
As part of the celebration, students participated in activities such as mask-making contests, and info-graphic design. These activities helped enhance and express the students’ appreciation to their culture and language through creation, publication and presentation of their creative works.
The mask-making contest allowed the participants to express their creativity by drawing elements that inspire Filipino culture, unity, as well as local and native identity while also being able to represent Filipino traditions from all around the country. From each category, two students were chosen to design masks that showcase Filipino values, culture, and passion for artistry.
Meanwhile, the infographic design activity encouraged the participants to creatively express and share information through colorful and eye-catching works while using the Filipino language. The infographics highlighted how Philippine languages preserve culture, connect people, and show positive nationalism while helping groups of students gain more knowledge about Filipino culture and traditions by allowing them to research, organize, and present information.
After the events were held, the school gathered to have a mass for the feast of St. Augustine, with students wearing traditional Filipino attire. It served as a meaningful way to celebrate both Buwan ng Wika, and St. Augustine. As the mass ended, each section continued the celebration in their respective areas by sharing a simple feast and showing appreciation for culture and faith.
