When Alarms Sound and Science Steps In SJC Cavite City Fire and Earthquake Drill 2026

JUNIOR JOSEPHIAN CHRONICLES

Safety is an important part of science because it involves understanding how natural and human-made hazards affect people. To help students learn how to respond during emergencies, St. Joseph College of Cavite Inc. (SJC) conducted its Fire and Earthquake Drill 2026. The activity focused on disaster preparedness, emergency response, and the science behind fire and earthquakes.

The drill started early in the morning when the alarm sounded, signaling a simulated emergency. Students from the elementary, junior high, senior high, and college departments followed proper evacuation procedures. Teachers and staff guided students calmly to designated safe areas. This showed how discipline and awareness help reduce panic during real-life emergencies. Firefighters were present to observe and ensure that the evacuation was done correctly and safely.

One of the scientific highlights of the drill was the firefighters’ discussion on fire safety. They explained how fires start due to heat, fuel, and oxygen, which are known as the fire triangle. They also discussed how fires spread quickly if not controlled. According to them, understanding these basic concepts can help people prevent fires and respond properly. They emphasized that staying calm and acting quickly during the first few minutes of a fire can save lives.

A hands-on fire extinguisher demonstration made the activity more engaging. Firefighters chose a staff member, an elementary student, a junior high student, and a college student to participate. Each volunteer learned how to use a fire extinguisher using the PASS method: Pull the pin, Aim at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle, and Sweep from side to side. This activity helped students understand how science-based tools are used to control fire safely.

The drill also included earthquake preparedness, which is related to earth science. Students were reminded to perform the “Drop, Cover, and Hold” method during an earthquake. This technique protects the body from falling objects and strong shaking caused by movements of the Earth’s crust. After the simulated shaking, students evacuated in an orderly manner, showing the importance of coordination and planning during natural disasters.

Medical safety was also given importance during the drill. Medical teams were on standby in case of emergencies. Students and staff with asthma or breathing problems were immediately assisted and brought to the school clinic to avoid health risks. This highlights the role of health science in emergency preparedness, ensuring that everyone’s physical condition is considered during drills.

Overall, the Fire and Earthquake Drill 2026 showed how science, discipline, and teamwork work together to keep people safe. Through demonstrations, explanations, and proper medical support, SJC proved that being prepared is a scientific and practical way to protect lives. Activities like this help students become more aware, responsible, and ready to face real emergencies.
